RONGAI 6 DAYS

From USD 1,880 per person

The Rongai Route is considered one of the easiest ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, with a high summit success rate. It begins on the mountain’s north side, just south of the Kenyan border, and is one of the least crowded routes. Descent is via the Marangu Route on the southern side, giving climbers views from different perspectives.

The drive to the trailhead takes about 3 hours from Moshi, passing villages and coffee plantations, with permit registration at Marangu. The route can also be accessed from Amboseli National Park, about 2 hours away including the border crossing (passport copies required in advance).

A taste of what to expect…

Day 1: Hotel to Simba Camp

Drive about 2 hours from Moshi to the wooden village of Nale Moru, with a stop at Marangu to obtain permits for Mount Kilimanjaro. After registration and porter preparation, begin hiking along a wide track through maize and potato fields before entering a pine forest. The trail climbs gently through beautiful forest rich in wildlife, gradually thinning as you approach the moorland zone. Your first camp is set at the edge of the moorland, offering wide views over the Kenyan plains.

This morning’s hike is a steady ascent to Second Cave on Mount Kilimanjaro, offering superb views of Kibo and the eastern ice fields along the crater rim. The trail passes through open moorland with wide, scenic landscapes.

Very early (midnight–2 AM), begin the final climb to Uhuru Peak on steep scree or snow, first reaching Gilman’s Point at 5,700 m / 18,700 ft. Continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, with breathtaking views along the way. Take photos at the summit before descending to Kibo Hut for lunch and rest, then continue down to Horombo Camp.

The ascent starts in darkness, so headlamps or flashlights are required. It will be very cold until you begin descending, so wear all warm layers. This is the most challenging section with many switchbacks; proceed slowly (“pole pole”) and stay positive to reach the top.

At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy).

Monkey Adventures vehicle will meet you at Marangu gate to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi (about 1 hour).
