Mount Meru stands tall at 4,566 meters, making it the second-highest mountain in Tanzania after Mount Kilimanjaro. Located within Arusha National Park, Mount Meru offers some of the most breathtaking scenery and diverse wildlife of any mountain in the country.
The trek is both exciting and challenging, featuring rocky ridges and a steep ascent to the summit. However, it is one of the best ways to experience high-altitude trekking in Tanzania. It is also an excellent acclimatization climb for those preparing to conquer Mount Kilimanjaro.
During the trek, hikers are rewarded with spectacular views including stunning glimpses of the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro rising above the clouds.
A taste of what to expect…
Day 1: Hotel to Momella gate to Miriakamba Hut
The drive from Arusha to Momella Gate takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. Upon arrival, we complete all park registration formalities before beginning the trek.
The trail passes through scenic landscapes offering breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the beautiful Momella Lakes. Along the way, trekkers may encounter wildlife such as bushbucks, Cape buffaloes, giraffes, and warthogs.
We continue hiking a short distance until we reach Miriakamba Hut, where we spend the night.

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut
Today we trek along a steep trail following the ridge of the saddle. Along the way, you will enjoy spectacular views of the Mount Meru crater, the dramatic Ash Cone, and Little Meru.
There are good chances of encountering wildlife such as Cape buffaloes and the black-and-white colobus monkey as we ascend. The trek concludes at Saddle Hut, where we spend the night.
After settling into camp, we take a short acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,810m) before returning to Saddle Hut for dinner and rest.

Day 3: Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak to Miriakamba Hut
We wake just after midnight and have a light meal before beginning the final ascent to Socialist Peak (4,562m), the highest point of Mount Meru. The climb is steep and rocky, making it the most challenging part of the trek.
At the summit, enjoy stunning views of the Meru Crater and Ash Cone. After celebrating, we descend to Miriakamba Hut.
Elevation: 3,500m to 4,562m, then down to 2,500m

Day 4: Miriakamba Hut to Momella gate
After breakfast, we continue the descent down to the Momella Gate, we will change the route and take the southern route down hence the change in distance trekked on this day. We will also pass through the astonishing Fig tree Arch.
Monkey Adventures vehicle will be waiting for you at Momella gate to drive you back to your hotel in Arusha (around 1 hour and 30 minutes).
