Great Migration & River Crossing in Serengeti
This 3-day fly-in safari to Northern Serengeti is perfect for witnessing the Great Migration river crossings. From July to early September, thousands of wildebeest and zebras gather at the Mara River, facing strong currents and crocodiles as they attempt to cross.
Crossings happen unpredictably, adding to the excitement. You will stay at a camp near the main crossing points, giving you quick access when the action begins.
Beyond the migration, Northern Serengeti offers vast savannahs, stunning landscapes, and abundant wildlife, including lions, leopards, and cheetahs.
Please note: This safari starts in a remote Kogatende region of Northern Serengeti, which is best reachable by a bush plane. You can fly to Serengeti from all key airports in Tanzania – Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Dar-es-Salaam or Zanzibar. The tour does not include domestic flights, but we can book those for you as well – just let us know your pre- and post-safari plans.
A taste of what to expect…
Day 1 - Fly into Serengeti National Park
Your adventure begins with a flight to Kogatende Airstrip in Northern Serengeti. After a short transfer to your tented camp, enjoy lunch and relax before your first game drive.
From July to September, this region hosts the dramatic Great Migration, when thousands of wildebeest and zebras cross the Mara River in search of fresh grazing while predators wait nearby.
Game drives are conducted in open-sided safari vehicles for the best wildlife viewing, especially during river crossings and predator sightings. Closed vehicles can be arranged on request.
Note: Flights are not included in the tour price. Please let us know your departure location, and we will assist with booking the flight. Most flights arrive in the morning, and your driver-guide will meet you at the airstrip.
Day 2 - Serengeti National Park — Kogatende
Spend a full day exploring the Kogatende area in Northern Serengeti. The Mara River flows through this region, forming a natural border between Serengeti and Kenya’s Masai Mara. Here, thousands of wildebeest, zebras, and other grazing animals cross during the annual Great Migration.
This spectacular event usually occurs between mid-July and late August and attracts wildlife filmmakers from around the world. Your guide will help you follow the herds and search for dramatic river crossings and the predators that follow them.
Day 3 - Flight out of Serengeti
Today you will take a scenic flight over the beautiful landscapes of Tanzania. If time allows, you may enjoy a short morning game drive on the way to the airstrip after an early breakfast.
Alternatively, you can have a relaxed breakfast at camp before departing for your flight. Your guide will adjust the schedule based on your preference and flight time.
