LEMOSHO 8 DAYS

From USD 2,150 per person

The Lemosho Route is one of the best options for acclimatization on Mount Kilimanjaro. It is less crowded and offers a scenic approach across the Shira Plateau.

On the first day, groups may be accompanied by an armed ranger, as the forests around the Lemosho Glades are home to buffalo, elephants, and other wildlife.

The 8-day Lemosho itinerary has one of the highest summit success rates. The extra days allow better acclimatization, reduce the risk of altitude sickness, and provide more time to rest before the final summit attempt.

A taste of what to expect…

Day 1: Hotel to Mti Mkubwa Camp

After breakfast and briefing, drive to Lemosho Park Gate on Mount Kilimanjaro. From here, a forest track requiring a 4WD vehicle leads to Lemosho Glades. Begin your walk along scenic forest trails to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp.

Distance: 6km / 4mi
Hiking Time: 2–3 hours
Habitat: Montane Forest

After breakfast, continue your trek as the trail gradually steepens and enters the giant heather moorland zone on Mount Kilimanjaro. After crossing several streams, hike over Shira Ridge and then descend gently to Shira 1 Camp, located beside a stream on the Shira Plateau.

After breakfast, enjoy a gentle hike across the plateau leading to Shira 2 Camp, set on open moorland meadows beside a stream on Mount Kilimanjaro. A variety of optional hikes are available on the plateau, making this an excellent day for acclimatization.

Distance: 8km / 5mi
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

From the Shira Plateau on Mount Kilimanjaro, continue east along a ridge, passing the junction toward the peak of Kibo. The trail then turns southeast toward Lava Tower, known as “Shark’s Tooth” (4,650m / 15,250ft). Shortly after, you reach the second junction leading to Arrow Glacier before descending to Barranco Camp.

Although you finish the day at a similar elevation to where you started, this is a crucial acclimatization day. The climb high and sleep low profile helps your body adjust and prepares you for summit day.

Elevation: 3,850m / 12,600ft to 4,000m / 13,000ft
Distance: 8km / 5mi
Walking Time: 5–6 hours

After breakfast, leave Barranco Camp on Mount Kilimanjaro and ascend the steep Barranco Wall. Continue along the ridge to Karanga Valley and reach the junction that connects with the Mweka Trail.

Elevation: 4,000m / 13,000ft to 4,050m / 13,250ft
Distance: 5km / 3mi

Around midnight to 2 am, begin the summit ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro, climbing between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers toward Stella Point. This is the toughest part of the trek. After a short rest and sunrise views, continue for about one hour to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa.

Descend via Barafu Camp for lunch, then continue down to Mweka Camp for your final night on the mountain.

After breakfast, descend from Mweka Camp to Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. Trails can be wet and muddy at lower elevations, so gaiters and trekking poles are helpful. Shorts and t-shirts are usually sufficient, but keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy.

A Monkey Adventures vehicle will meet you at the gate and drive you back to your hotel in Moshi (about 60 minutes).
